About me…

I am an actress, model, writer and law graduate; not really that unusual but I am also paraplegic as a result of an accident as a teenager. I first began modelling in 1994 when I won the UK’s first ever modelling competition for disabled people. Since then I have worked on many different campaigns and featured in newspapers and magazines all over the world.  I’ve been acting since I trained at Anna Scher as a child and later at the Central School of Speech & Drama; acting had been my primary passion from a very young age, until my accident.

In February 2010 I became the first disabled model to feature in a high street advertising campaign, as a result of appearances on Channel 4’s How to Look Good Naked, I modelled the new Principles range by Ben de Lisi for Debenhams. I have also appeared on numerous television and radio programmes speaking about modelling, acting and the portrayal of disabled people in the media. I continue to try and improve the representation of disability in the media and hope to challenge the way disability is perceived by our able bodied society; in 2011 I attended 2 events with the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street.

I have extensive experience in mentoring young people adjusting to an acquired disability and discussing their concerns around body image, sexuality, socialising and relationships.  I also regularly speak about disability and overcoming problems in the workplace at corporate events and discuss issues surrounding adolescence and disability at school workshops. Hi Shannon, my name is Jimmy Treacy and I want to say how impressed I am with your courage and confidence. I also suffered a C6/C7 SCI diving while in New York in 2003. The first years were difficult but now I am glad to say that I have the courage and confidence like you to face the world. I am just completing a 3rd year Business program in college and now enjoy socializing regularly. Keep up the good work and good luck with your career and life.

I notice you say you are a paraplegic, but in the account of your injury you say you broke C7. I thought people with that level of injury are quadriplegics. Or is the injury not complete enough to affect your arm or hand function?

    • Hello Indigo Jo
Neurological function after spinal cord injury isn’t always as straightforward as that; the spinal cord is simply too complex.
Yes I did break my neck at C7 but I was incredibly fortunate that the resulting neurological motor damage did not restrict my arm or hand function; something for which I am grateful every day.
Hope that helps shed some light on it for you.
